AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION IN SMILTENE FOUNDED

Latvian farmers, newly freed from serfdom, were diligent and hardworking. Still, they recognized that great things could only be accomplished by sharing experiences and helping each other.

1881

SMILTENE MANOR DAIRY PLANT ESTABLISHED

Local farmers began acquiring skills in producing high-quality dairy products. The location couldn't have been better – well-fed cows and a dedicated workforce eager to learn.

1901

ESTABLISHING A DAIRY PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION

Over the next few years, the most active members of the Dairy Producers Association of Smiltene managed to process more than 500 tons of high-quality milk per year. The locals certainly appreciated that.

1910

SMILTENES PIENS JSC ESTABLISHED; (ORIGINALLY - PKS “SMILTENES PIENOTAVA”)

Construction of the dairy plant begins on this year. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for the company's future successes. Since then, Smiltenes Piens has made fresh milk and delicious dairy products accessible to everyone.

COMPANY MODERNIZATION COMMENCED AND CONTINUED DURING THE FIRST INDEPENDENCE PERIOD OF LATVIA

After Latvia gained independence, delivery options expanded with the opening of six creamery points. This allowed farmers located further from the plant to deliver milk to the artizans of the Smiltene daily plant.

1918

300 FARMS SELLING MILK TO THE DAIRY PLANT

Smiltene primarily produced butter for export, renowned for its quality among Western European specialists and gourmands. The dairy plant was also producing cheese for domestic needs.

1926

DAIRY PLANT BECOMES SUBORDINATE TO VALMIERAS PIENA KOMBINĀTS

Smiltenes Piens also produced cheese and other delicacies, which found their way to major Russian cities. A unique butter-making method gained the company particular recognition and popularity among consumers.

1949

SMILTENE DAIRY PLANT OWNED BY VALMIERAS PIENA KOMBINĀTS TRANSFERRED TO SPKS “SMILTENES PIENOTAVA”

After Latvia regaining independence, a challenging yet rewarding development period began, which continues to this day.

1993

COMPANY IS REORGANIZED AND RENAMED JSC SMILTENES PIENS

Embracing a new business model as a joint-stock company, the determined team laid a new foundation for the company's future. The era of uncertainty had passed.

1998

MERGER WITH JSC BLOMES SIERS

Previously, the plant in Blome produced Tilsiter and Gouda cheeses and smoked cheese “Azaids”. After the merger, an even more successful development of this important industry for Latvia was to take place.

2000

2000 – 2004; MODERNIZATION OF THE COMPANY

Significant investments were made in both Smiltene and Blome plants, including installing new production units, renovating existing buildings, and constructing new ones. The highlight was the opening of a new cheese department and modernized cheese aging facilities in Blome. This commitment to quality has been recognized!

JSC SMILTENES PIENS ELIGIBLE TO USE THE GREEN SPOON QUALITY LABEL

The High-Qality product of Latvia label, or “Green spoon”, has been awarded to consumer favourites such as “Lauku” cottage cheese, the famous Tilsiter, Gouda, Uglich and "Latvijas" cheeses, as well as the “Azaids” processed cheese.

2005

2008 – 2009. SPECIALISTS FROM SMILTENE GAIN INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

Smiltenes Piens has won prizes at the Riga Food fair and the Worldfood international food fair in Moscow. Our award-winning products include cottage cheese cakes, sour cream, Uglich cheese, and Tilsiter cheese.

2008
